Biking

As part of the University’s commitment to Sustainability, the University is recommending that Departments and students consider purchasing bicycles to use as transportation for couriering, meetings and other University related functions. The bicycles discussed below should be easily purchased locally for less than $500. For local shops where you may purchase the bicycles discussed below please refer to the Links page. Hybrid Bicycle -Hybrid bicycles share a combination of features from both mountain and road bikes. The wheels are not as sturdy on trails as those of a mountain bike, nor are they as thin and fast as those of a road bike on paved surfaces. But hybrid wheels are versatile enough that you could ride comfortably on either surface. Hybrids tend to have a relatively high number of gears and upright handlebars.

Pro: Good for riding on multiple surfaces and a little less expensive than a road bike.

Con: Mountain bikes are a better choice for trails and road bikes for road riding.

Three Wheel Tricycle -
Tricycles are, as the name suggests, three-wheeled bikes. They come in all shapes and sizes, as racing tricycles, recumbents, tandems, load carriers or trikes designed for those with a specific disability. Trikes are very stable, and may be beneficial for people who have trouble balancing a two-wheeled bike. Additionally, they are well suited for larger/heavier deliveries when combined with a rear basket.

Pro: The advantages of riding a tricycle include strength and stability for carrying big loads, ease of parking and stability when cycling.

Con: Drawbacks include not fitting through small spaces and being more awkward to lift or carry. Also, these trikes may not be suitable for many campus sidewalks (pedestrian conflicts).

Folding Bicycles -
Folding bicycles are an excellent choice for those with limited storage space. They are good for medium distance rides (up to 10 miles). Folding bikes come in many guises. Some fold up very small; others are larger and partially collapsible. Cheaper versions can be very heavy and may not fold up easily.

Pro : These bikes work well as quick transportation and are easily stored.

Con: They may be limited in their ability to transport larger items across campus.
